An old-apartment renovation checklist

1. Pipes under the floor

Old apartments usually have worn metal plumbing. If the floors are being replaced, now is the time to replace the pipes.

2. Wiring and earthing

Old wiring can’t carry today’s appliances. Plan for new wiring and a proper earth.

3. Bathroom waterproofing

• A 48-hour flood test
• Waterproofing up to shower height

4. A fixed price

Before work starts, get the price in writing, split into materials and labour.
